The best method for weed control is hand pulling. But, for large areas, areas that gotten out of control, or if you're trying to make a new bed where grass is currently, we recommend 'Recycling to Suppress Weeds'. With this method, before mulching, you lay down all the flattenend cardboard, cereal boxes, magazines and newspaper you've been saving for the recycling bin. You need enough to cover the area completely. Wet it down to keep it from blowing away, and then immediately mulch over the paper layer. During the laying down process it will look really messy, but don't worry, the mulch will cover it and it will then look nice and tidy.
Under the mulch, the paper layer will break down over the season. As it does, it will act as a weed suppressant, as a moisture conserver, and as an earthworm attractor. All of these are great for your landscaping plants! Your weeds will be smothered, you'll conserve on watering, and the earthworms will create crumbly, easy to grow in, aerated soil with built in eco-fertilizer (worm poo). Plus, all of this will also be for FREE! This year, I hope you give this method a try. It's a good one on so many levels.
